Our collaboration with TFBC originally
began as an overall master planning project. After being selected through an
invitation only design competition, we assisted the Church in assessing their
then current fa- cilities versus anticipated needs in both the short and long
terms. Conse- quently, a
compre- hensive plan of expan- sions and renovations was generated that integrated
the spirit of our winning design entry with this newly generated data.
Therefore, even if the plan is realized over decades with multiple leaderships,
the end result will exhibit a cohesive design.
With the plan in place, we then
proceeded to make reality of the first phase of needed ex- pansion. The resultant
new facility included space for additional classrooms, youth wor- ship,
fellowship and physical fitness.
Seen here is the main entrance to the
facility with covered drop off and que space. Resting atop the canopies are the
expansive windows of the Teen Worship space to the left and the Children's
Worship space to the right. These were carefully designed and oriented to frame
views to the mountains beyond |

Due to budget/fund raising
constraints, not all of the identified needs were able to be incorporated into
phase one. However, with a master plan in place that provides a listing of
priorities and ideal locations for each, mov- ing forward with con- sensus is
still possible.
Here, due to the dire need for
additional parking, the site to the rear of the sanctuary was chosen. This site
also coincided with the desired location of the highest priority space needs.
This decision immediately confronted us with two design challenges: creating an
appropriate "back door" entrance to the campus; and linking that entrance to the
existing sanctuary. We chose to use the two required youth worship spaces in
conjunction with a uniquely designed drop off canopy to create this new,
monumental entrance to meet the first challenge. And we chose to use the new
conn- ection to the existing campus to complete the framing of a new courtyard
created.
Also seen in this image is the site of
future expansion to the far left.

This elevation photo shows the
composition of individual forms to create a balanced whole. The series of square
windows place high on the walls is used in this balancing act in addition to
providing natural light to the gymnasium.

Here, another
elevation photo shows the composition of the new structure with the existing
sanctuary. The design intent is to present a new structure that is of the
original, not a copy. Familiar elements are borrowed in the new structure: the
colonnade, circular windows, brick detailing, brick colors and roof
material/color are all redistributed in a contemporary
way.

Here, in the new courtyard created
between the existing sanctuary and the new facility, a safe, secure outdoor
space was created in connection with the new
classrooms.

In
addition to the architectural design team, TFBC worked with a "branding/image" de- sign team to uniquely identify their youth ministry program. We then
collaborated with this team for the interior design and construction of the
associated spaces. The result is a vibrant yet comfortable atmosphere that
creates a "place of their own." Here we see a com- fortable gathering
space with a stage for informal presentations/ perform- ances. This space is
connected to a cafe.

The fitness center included: two full
size basketball courts, a walking/jogging track, a weight room, an aerobics room
and locker/shower facilities.
Seen here in the gym are the track and
basketball courts. The track was suspended from the roof structure above to take
advantage of underutilized space.

This image from
the original design concept shows that it remained largely intact through
design. There were (and always is) some modifications, however. The roof form of
the Teen Worship space was re-designed to fit better within the surrounding
context.

This image is from a series of
renderings done during the master planning design effort showing “what could
be”. Although, the expansion to the rear of the sanctuary appears different
here, the essential spirit remains. The new construction shown in the foreground
is a planned new fellowship hall.
