Our relationship with this client has grown for over 15 years and has been
strengthened by 75+ projects (and counting!). These projects have varied in size
from just a few thousand dollars to over $4 million.
It is anticipated that construction on our latest endeavor together will
begin in 2011. Shown here is a schematic rendering of the southwest portion of
the building. As indicated in the rendering, the building is three stories and
presents a unique form. Due to programmatic requirements, the first floor
requires an uncommonly high ceiling giving the building a tall, slender
appearance. The exterior materials are integrally colored concrete panels (the
mottled, green material) and insulated metal panels (the metallic, bluish-gray
material). Aside from the unique form, we also see an irregular window pattern.
Window placement and size was strongly influenced by stringent security
requirements and interior space use. i.e. The long, horizontal windows indicate
meeting/ gathering spaces while the vertically oriented windows are placed in
open office and circulation areas. |

The site plan here begins to show the multitude of influences that informed
the unique shape of the building. To the north, we see a steeply sloped hill
leading up to an existing building. To the south, east and west we find existing
buried infrastructure, the operation of which cannot be interrupted.
Additionally, to the east and south there are existing driveways that cannot be
blocked or relocated. It quickly became clear that the site is landlocked, as
indicated by the red poche in the image representing buildable area.
Programmatic requirements for truck/material access for campus maintenance staff
as well as a 400 person auditorium and cafeteria virtually dictated their
placement within the site. Guided by our designers and influenced by these
forces, a unique design was born. |

This view of the southeast portion of the building highlights the mottled
concrete panels, showcasing them as a design response to the obvious lack of
windows. Again, stringent security requirements shaped the windows visible to the
left while eliminating them all together to the right. Their placement within
the building on this side was strategic to take advantage the sun's path across
the site. So, what we've done is taken the rooms that are not allowed to have
windows and arranged them in such a fashion as to block the hottest rays of the
sun.

Here we see the due east portion of the building. Again, an obvious lack of
windows due to security on the side(s) of the building receiving the low,
powerful rays of the sun. This view illustrates the increased pressure placed on
the materials, their arrangement and detailing as well as our response in a
budget conscious fashion.

As we turn the northeastern corner of the building in this image, we see that
the vast majority of spaces allowing windows are gathered on the north side of
the building. Here, we can place the maximum amount of windows allowed by
security without fear of the sun's rays. The creative sizing and placement of
the modular metal panels along with the patterns created by the metallic coating
work together with the window pattern to create interest. |

Here we step back in time to an earlier phase in the design of this building.
During conceptual design, we utilize tools presented to us by our BIM software
to study the 3-dimensional form of the building from the beginning. This allows
us to study real world issues such as constructability, functionality, sun and
shadow patterns, and energy use just to name a few.
This happens to be a view of the southeast corner of the building and while
numerous differences are apparent, the schematic images reveal the overall
design concept remain. |

This image looking down on the roof proved valuable in studying the roof
design when developing construction estimates with the contractor allowing them
to make suggestions very early in the design process.
