BI-LO has been an MCA client since
1995, during which time we have completed over 200 projects. We have designed
multiple grocery store prototype buildings, remodels, expansions and site
adapts located throughout North Caro- lina, South Carolina, Georgia and
Tennessee. Prototypes vary in size from
36,000 sf to 58,000 sf. Remodels and expan- sions vary in scope from simple
casework modifi- cations to complete renovations. Site adapts have included both
stand-alone stores and those with retail shops.
This
store, completed in 2006 in Red Banks, TN, is a site adapt of our 47,000 sf
prototype design. This site also included a revision to the prototype design
adding a drive-thru pharmacy.

This remodel and expansion, located in
Greenville, SC, was completed in 2007. This project consisted of demol- ishing a
portion of the existing shopping center to allow for the expansion, resulting
in a 56,000 sf store. The prototype was revised to address the existing
shopp- ing center aesthetic and street frontage on two sides.

When designing a prototype, our
experience and expertise allow us to shape and mold space. Some of the
strategies we use to accomplish this are shown in the next few images. Various
ceiling heights and soffits are used to define space. Lighting and color are then
used to strengthen that space as well as create atmosphere.
The
produce department, shown here, exhibits an open-air market feel. The colors
and materials all work to emphasize the myriad colors in the produce.

In this image, the deli and bakery are to the
left while the produce department is to the right. This photo shows how these
techniques create markedly different spaces.

This image of the floral department is a good
example of how all interior signage, vendor displays and building systems are
coordinated to minimize changes that may be required in the field.
